This might interest some action researchers and designers.

We are attempting an engaged form of ‘publishing’ by combining an exhibition with local and related events.

The exhibition, People Building Better Cities: Participation and Inclusive Urbanization, is traveling to ten countries to exchange knowledge, build networks, and promote dialogue between communities, urban professionals, universities, non-governmental organizations, and policy makers on the challenges of inclusive urbanization and climate change. While the exhibition focus is on developing countries, it also speaks to urban issues in developed countries such as growing inequality and climate change. Associated public events in each city of the ten countries will localize the exhibition content. The holding of a relevant local public program, of interest to a cross-section of people, is a central element of the PBBC project.

PBBC has been held in Bangkok and Rio de Janeiro, and is currently on display in Sydney at Customs House, Circular Quay. It opens in Johannesburg on May 18.

Building on the work of Global Studio (www.theglobalstudio.com) an international education program, the exhibition documents community-driven projects that share a common goal in Africa, India, Asia and the USA: the promotion of inclusive urbanization to improve the lives of the urban poor through innovations in participatory design and planning. It also presents an alternative approach to the education of urban professionals, and a model for urban practice.

An A3 (folded) handout provides exhibition viewers a guide to the content on each of the 24 panels, as well as the Global Studio participatory ‘tool kit’, a set of 20 possible actions to promote civic engagement in urban development and design.

The project website has a unique objective to build a resource platform of use to academics, students, professionals, NGOs, CBOs, urban policy makers and implementers, activists and the general public. Resources are sorted by type (books, articles, talks, films, websites) and by topic (the exhibition panel themes). These include case studies, community engagement, education, inclusive design and planning, climate change, inequality, population growth and slums, and organizations working in these fields. The public is invited to contribute – and share- their resources. (http://peoplebuildingbettercities.org/resources/)

The project is a partnership between Global Studio and Columbia University’s Center for Sustainable Urban Development.
