Hi Debbie,
I haven't replied to anyone on Jisc mail before, but I hope this will help. If someone has a nut allergy they should avoid using any products containing nuts or nut oil. If they have had an anaphylactic reaction, they're likely to have been seen by an allergy specialist and will know if the allergy is to nuts or peanuts. They may be allergic to both. Peanuts are actually legumes, not nuts. It's worth remembering that arachis oil, which is made from peanuts is sometimes used in hand lotions etc. The anaphylaxis society have a web page that is a useful resource for anyone with allergies.
Kind regards, Annie

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Skin allergy

Dear All

I have not been on jiscmail for such a long time, but would really value some help with this.

It’s been identified that some of the hand soap scrub used by one of our clients contains walnut shell – the question put forward is ‘could this have an effect on staff who have nut allergies if it gets into broken skin’.

Not one I have been asked before. The MSDS does not state any issues with normal use; however, I want to say yes there could be an issue, but have no evidence for this either way.

Any thoughts please?

Kind regards
Debbie
