An invitation to MECCSA list members (All Welcome)

The Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural studies is leading a Humanities festival exploring death and dying. Join us next month (May) for a series of talks, expert panels and discussions about the representation of death - as well as the opportunity to hear great music and poetry, see award-winning theater and films, and engage with fascinating exhibitions.

Some events likely to be of particular interest to MECCSA members are highlighted below. For more information and to register for tickets (mainly free) go to www.cardiff.ac.uk/beforeidie.  The website also gives details of over a dozen other events you might enjoy.

  ·          ‘Death in Film’ a panel discussion of film representations of death, followed by a showing of ‘The Sea Inside’ - the Oscar-winning film which explores the (now very topical) theme of assisted dying.
  Thursday 16th May, 1pm
  ·         ‘Representing the Dead’ –  talks by academics and practitioners reflect on how dead bodies are displayed in the news and in museums and how death is reported.
  ·         ‘A Matter of Life or Death: representing coma’ – a presentation examining popular cultural representations of coma, alongside clinical accounts of 'coma' and family experiences.
  ·         Discussion of ‘Paula’ by Isabel Allende - join us for an evening 'book group' panel and discussion about Isabel Allende’s powerful memoir dealing with her daughter’s coma and eventual death.
  Friday 17th
  ·         Julian Stair: Quietus, the vessel, death and the human body. This exhibition, hosted by the National Museum, explores the containment of the human body after death and will be contextualised through a talk on the history of funeral ceramics.
  ·          ‘Warm Bodies’ a screening and discussion of the new ‘Zombie movie’ and what this tells us about ‘the living dead’ in popular culture.
  Saturday 18th
  ·         ‘Up’ and ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ – a screening of these two beautiful animations exploring loss and death, and the opportunity for family discussion. Also visit the multi-media exhibition of young people’s creative responses to death that will be on display in the foyer.
  ·          ‘McCullin, documentary portrait of a front line photographer’ –  the story of this legendary name in photojournalism.
  Sunday 19th
  ·         Walking tour of Cathays cemetery –  a guided walk around this fascinating landscape,  learning about its history and what the people buried within can tell us and reflecting on cemeteries as cultural repositories.
  ·         Stages of Death:  an afternoon of presentations, workshops and performances exploring how opera and ballet represent grief, suffering, and mortality.
All welcome - join us for an afternoon, an evening, or the whole 10 days!
