Part-time 10 month contract:

Salary: £31,000 pro rata, 4 days a week (£24,800)

Job purpose
To be responsible for the arrangement, description, and preservation of all
archival material relating to Anna Freud, which includes manuscripts and
drafts, letters, photographs, patient information and other materials relating
to the life and work of Anna Freud and the Freud family. The Museum
currently has no archivist on its staff.
Background
The Freud Museum London is the final home of Sigmund Freud, the
founder of psychoanalysis and his daughter Anna Freud. It opened to the
public in 1986. Since the Museum launched its Development Plan in 2006,
it has been steadily moving forward in order diversify and increase its
audiences through improvements to interpretation, exhibitions, visitor
services and programming.
Freud Museum Archives
The archives contain approximately 8,000 letters and over 1,000
miscellaneous documents. Many of these are copies, as a large number of
original documents were transferred to the Library of Congress in
Washington during the second half of the 20th century. The archives also
include approximately 4,000 photographs. Most of the 170 prints are
reproductions of works of art, probably souvenirs of Freud's travels. There
are also around 2,000 press cuttings relating to the Freuds.
Anna Freud Project
In March 2013 the Museum was awarded funding from the Arts Council
England to undertake a one-year project relating to Anna Freud who was a
pioneer of child psychoanalysis and lived at Maresfield Gardens from 1938
until her death in 1982. The Project, which will be undertaken in
partnership with the nearby Anna Freud Centre, has four key strands:
Collections: To consolidate the existing records and conduct
research in order to complete the catalogue for collections and
archival material relating to Anna Freud; to improve storage for these
collections; to identify significant items for display; to photograph key
items and make them available on the Museum's website.
Interpretation: To re-develop the Anna Freud Room in order to
present more engaging and relevant displays on her life and work in
children's development and mental health, her influence on
education, healthcare and the law and her complex relationship with
her father and others.
Artist in Residence: To host an artist to engage with the collections
and support staff working on the redisplay, to contribute to the
learning programme and develop their own work.
Learning: A specialist primary education freelancer will devise a new
learning session and supporting resources, based on themes in
Anna's work and life.
