Inequality in the workplace: intersections of gender and class.
The difficulties experienced by women and marginalised men within the workplace have been well-documented. Acker's (1990) seminal work has pointed to organisations as the site where gender and gender inequality are (re)produced through 'inequality regimes'. The theory of 'intersectionality' has been used to explore how gender interacts with other characteristics such as ethnicity to confer both advantage and disadvantage to individuals (Crenshaw, 1991; Warner, 2008). Much of the current debates of how gender is (re)produced in the workplace have relied upon structural arguments with little attention played to individual agency and micro-practices (Whitehead, 2002). How gender may intersect with social class to qualitatively affect lived experiences and career progression within the workplace is under-researched. Further, the role of individual agency and practices in perpetuating inequality remains little understood. Likely using an in depth qualitative approach, this project would adopt an intersectional perspective to understand how gender intersects with other characteristics such as social class to affects women and men's lived experiences of the workplace.
