Understanding Mathematical Anxiety in dyslexic/dyscalculic students in FE/HE

A one day CPD course at Loughborough University
Wednesday 5th June 2013

Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the day the participants should have:
•         A greater awareness of mathematical anxiety
•         A greater insight into the why dyslexic/dyscalculic students become anxious
•         An understanding of how to support the mathematically anxious student
•         Be able to develop and use teaching and learning ideas to for the mathematically anxious student.

Method of Teaching and Learning
The day includes a combination of lectures, practical group work and discussion.

There is no assessment but participants are expected to take an active part in the day.

Certificates of attendance will be issued

9:30 – 10:00              Coffee, welcome and introduction to the day
10:00 – 11:00            What is mathematical anxiety?
11:00 – 11:15            Coffee/Tea
11:15 – 12:15            Mathematical anxiety: further explorations.
12:15 – 13:15            Lunch
13:15 – 14:15            Exam Stress
14:15 – 15:00            Insights from dyscalculic students
15:00 – 15:15            Coffee/Tea
15:15 – 16:15            Strategies to help
16:15 – 16:30            Evaluation of the day

The cost is £70 for the day inclusive of lunch and tea/coffee

Supporting the Dyscalculic Student in FE/HE

•         A greater insight into the why dyscalculic students struggle
•         An understanding of how to support the dyscalculic student
•         Be able to develop and use teaching and learning materials and resources to cater for different learning styles.

The day includes a combination of lectures, practical group work and discussion.
