Dear Simon,

Since working at the Art college, I have been running these sessions for our business support and academic staff. Take up rates have been pretty low, so we have now moved to a compulsory online training schedule via Disabled Go. All staff have to undertake this training when they start and I then do follow up sessions with groups of staff to discuss issues raised within the training.

We have found that this has worked really well, as opposed to half/full day trnaing sessions where everyone wanted something different. I am willing to share some of the follow up session slides with you if they would be helpful, but may not be if you are looking for a purely external solution.

Just as a further point, Disabled Go were really very flexible in tailoring how we funded the cost of the online trnaing, and we have negotiated a flat fee for the first year (so all current staff could undertake the course), with a piece rate thereafter for new employees. I am aware however that we are a relatively small provider, so this may not be appropriate for all.

Also, as neuro Partners provide all our NMH support, we have also invited them to put on sessions to academic staff on supporting students with mental health difficluites and Autism in the classroom. This has provded both of high quality and very successful with staff.

Hope this helps.

Simon

Subject: Disability awareness training

Dear Dis-Forum,

I have been approached by a number of colleagues about running some disability awareness training, i.e. not something aimed at disability specialists like us, but rather staff in other roles such as those working in academic schools or in the library.

We have run sessions like this before, but I wondered if anyone could recommend an external provider? The demand seems to be for a half or even full day course which would cover a wide of range of disability issues and include advice and guidance, e.g. 'do's and don'ts'. I'd be interested in hearing about people's experiences off or on list.

Many thanks...

Simon
