Up to 5 PhD candidate positions

at the Department of Social and Economic Geography.

Application no later than 2013-05-02. Ref: UFV-PA 2013/1062

Applications are invited for 4-5 fully funded positions at the department’s PhD/Doctoral program in Social and Economic Geography. The positions are available from the 1st of September 2013 and offer full funding for four years.

Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is Scandinavia's oldest university, and one of the largest with more than 40 000 students. The University is among the foremost research environments in Europe and has extensive library facilities and data resources. It grants around 300 doctoral degrees each year (see www.uu.se). The University is located centrally in lively and historic Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth largest city, and only 68 km north of the capital, Stockholm.

PhD candidate positions are fully funded. Funding comprises a study grant for the first year and then a salaried PhD candidate position. The doctoral program is designed as four years of full-time studies. In terms of the Swedish university credit system, the program comprises 240 credits (1.5 credit = 1 week of study, 30 credits = 1 semester of full-time study). There are two main components of the program: course work (90 credits) and work in connection with the Ph.D. dissertation, including seminars, theoretical work, data collection of different kinds, problem analysis, thesis authorship and supervision by highly qualified tutors (150 credits). Faculty funding normally finances the positions; some may also be linked to specific research programs and projects and have a particular direction. PhD candidates can be expected to assist with applications for external project funding.

PhD candidates are provided with their own workplace, computer, and some research expenses, and will have access to excellent research resources and libraries. Applicants must have a willingness and ability to learn Swedish rapidly. The Department (www.kultgeog.uu.se) is international in focus: PhD theses can be authored in English, and some doctoral courses and many seminars are in that language. Our PhD theses can either take the form of monographs or a minor collection of papers for publication in high quality refereed international journals.

Examples of cultivated research areas and fields in which there are existing strengths at the department are given below. In the selection process of suitable PhD candidates, we consider specifically to what extent we have resources for supervision and possibilities for external funding for the considered candidates.

  • Economic Geography, in particular Creativity, Innovation Industry and Regions in Change
  • Urban and Social Geography including Gender and Ethnicity Perspectives

  • Spatial Planning, Sustainability and Regional Development

  • Landscape Development and Rural Transformation

  • Migration and Mobility

  • Geographies of Children and Youth

Qualifications expected: To be considered for admission to postgraduate studies in Human Geography, the applicant must have completed at least a Bachelor´s degree or the equivalent to 240 Swedish university credits (including at least 60 credits at an advanced level) from a recognised university or third level institution.

Specific entry requirements for admission to postgraduate studies in Human Geography are that the completion of an equivalent to 90 Swedish university credits in Human Geography, or other academic qualifications assessed by the recruitment committee to be of an equivalent level. Applicants who completed undergraduate studies by 1 July 2007 in Sweden with at least 120 ‘old’ Swedish university credits will be considered eligible until 31 June 2015.

Application procedure: A recruitment committee will make an initial selection of applicants through a review of submitted documents and contacts with referees. The selected group of candidates is then called to an interview in Uppsala. The interviews will take place during a period from May 20th to June 5th. Candidates will be informed of the results of the selection process in the middle of June. Criteria for assessing applications are described in a separate document (‘Criteria for assessing applications to the PhD program’, see www.kultgeog.uu.se/postgraduate ).
