The Parliamentary Archives provides a records management and archives service for both Houses of Parliament. The Parliamentary Archives has an opportunity for a self-motivated graduate planning a career in archives to gain work experience in a stimulating environment, maintaining and developing our archives services. The job will be on a fixed-term basis from 23 September 2013 to 31 August 2014.  This training post is intended to provide a year's experience for someone requiring that as a condition for entry to a recognised UK archive course and candidates will be expected to start the application process during the training period. The post is not designed for students already enrolled in full or part-time archives courses, including distance learning courses.

Based in the Public Services & Outreach Team and reporting to the Archivist, the post holder will be involved in a wide range of professional work and be provided with good developmental opportunities. The work will include accessioning and cataloguing of Committee papers and other Parliamentary records using CALM to office procedure and international archival standards, answering of public enquiries in all media, invigilation in the search room, and assistance with outreach work such as the creation of exhibition displays and website work.

You must have a good degree, preferably in History; a determination to undertake a post-graduate archive qualification following the placement (but not already be enrolled in one); a commitment to archive work as a career, perhaps gained through volunteering in another archive or archives (but excluding significant paid work); excellent IT skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; strong team-working skills; the ability to organise your own time while keeping to schedules and meeting deadlines; and the ability to assimilate and interpret a wide range of sources. An awareness of archival cataloguing systems would be desirable.

Further details and an application form can be obtained from the Human Resources Office, [log in to unmask]. The House of Lords is committed to equal opportunities.
