Placement Location: Most placements will be located at the BBC White City site however some will be located in Central London, Perivale (London, Zone 4) or Caversham in Berkshire. 

 

Placement Length: 4 Weeks (offered every quarter)

 

Placement date: 24th June to 19th July 2013

 

About the Department

Information & Archives (I&A) manages one of the world’s largest audiovisual archive collections. The department consists of over 400 staff, managing both physical and digital assets held within the archive and providing a research and delivery service to content producers.

In addition to managing TV and radio content, I&A is responsible for a wealth of archive material including music, photos and documents, providing a record of BBC broadcasting history since 1922. In an environment dominated by new technology, digitisation and creativity, I&A ensures that the BBC’s greatest assets are preserved and accessible for the future.

 

About the Placement

Successful applicants will gain insight into the work within I&A teams on defined projects, actively contributing to the archive. After some initial training, applicants may be involved in projects such as processing archival collections, arranging and describing collection materials and implementing preservation strategies.

In addition to the above, you will be given an overview of the department, be able to visit other teams and undertake BBC Training where possible.

This placement is advertised quarterly.  The next placements will take place between 23rd September and 18th October. 

 

Criteria

In order to gain the most from this placement, applicants should have the following: 

 

Placements are available in the following I&A teams (some of which may have additional criteria and this is detailed where applicable):

 

Archive Development: (based in W12) develops and implements archival policy based on professional standards.

 

Digitisation Group: (based in Perivale UB6) manages the BBC's physical archive material and delivers material back to the user;  They are also responsible for all aspects of the technical handling and preservation of archive material. 

 

Intake: (based in W12 or Perivale UB6) ensure material has reached the archive and logs transmission metadata on to the system. 


Logistics: 
(based in W1, W12 or Perivale UB6) retrieve orders for archive material, ensure delivery to all BBC sites and manage news tapes. 

 

Media Management: (based in W1, W12 or Perivale UB6) work alongside content production areas to manage all BBC Assets and to oversee metadata collection at the point of creation.  Media management placements can specialise in the following areas:

 

Metadata Group: (based in W12) works strategically to improve metadata exchange across the BBC and oversees management of the Archive's taxonomies.

 

Research & Customer Services: (based in W12) provides professional research and advice to programme makers.  Additional criteria for this placement include:

 

Sheet Music Library: (based in Perivale UB6) provides professional research, advice and access to a comprehensive sheet music collection.  Additional criteria for this placement includes:

 


TV & Radio Cataloguing: 
(based in W12) catalogues and classifies BBC radio and TV output. 

 

Written Archive Centre: (based in Caversham, near Reading) holds the permanent written records for the whole of the BBC from 1922 onwards. 

 

Due to Health & Safety considerations, you will need to be aged 18 or over to apply for this placement.
