Thanks all so far, our new softboxes are still a little large to get under the table we have, I would need to see if I could get it all under there I suppose. Point taken on the double diffusion, I had wondered if using a head upside down would maybe not give enough diffusion. A colleague had suggested LED panels, as a framer we use is offering these for the transparency type lightbox photographs we have in the collection. No idea about them and the LED spectral curve could be dubious for colour in particular, but interesting nonetheless as they are very thin with not much heat. Might work for B/W negs?
