SUMMER SCHOOL
“Language,
gender, and sexuality: Discourses of precarious citizenship in precarious times – the Balkan experience” * Eressos
(Lesvos), July 1-24 2013 (LAGESEC 2013)
·
Course description:
LAGESEC 2013 is an interdisciplinary summer school focusing on language,
gender, and sexuality and its implications for citizenship in the geopolitical area of the Balkans. It brings together scholars from a variety of fields in the humanities and the social sciences in an attempt to enhance dialogue among researchers in linguistics,
anthropology, gender/sexuality studies, and Balkan studies.
As research on sexuality evolves and complements research on gender, citizenship has emerged as a pivotal issue. Research on language and gender and on language and sexuality has come to eventually focus
on rights and obligations, and especially on the evaluative (and often discriminating) character of membership in a nation state (and, thus, the potentially precarious status of some citizens). For more information and the structure of the program go to
https://lagesec2013.pns.aegean.gr/
·
Target group:
LAGESEC 2013 is mainly addressed to MA and PhD students in relevant fields in the humanities and the social sciences (e.g., (socio)linguistics, anthropology, gender/sexuality
studies, Balkan studies). However, applications by senior undergraduate students with a strong relevant background may also be considered (based on availability).
Applications will be assessed based on the relevance of applicant research/profile to the course and on a first-come-first-served basis. Applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose and a CV.
·
Course aim:
LAGESEC 2013 aims at an investigation of
language, gender, and sexuality in relation to citizenship in the Balkans from an interdisciplinary perspective (mostly linguistics, anthropology, and gender studies). The major goal is to familiarize students with the fact that the national narratives produced
in the Balkans (and elsewhere) are simultaneously gendered, sexed, and
ethnic as well as linguistic. I.e., national narratives use language to talk about the nation as an ethnic and linguistic, but also as a gendered and sexed entity. It is the indexical relations holding between these which inform LAGESEC 2013.
·
ECTS (if relevant):
The Summer School
course is equivalent to 10 ECTS credits (total 250 hours, including preparation, teaching, and final written paper time). LAGESEC 2013 offers a Certificate of Attendance to participants who have attended the Summer School and fulfilled
its requirements.
·
Fees (and what they include):
The registration fee is
450 euros (which includes tuition fees, transport to and from Mitilini to Eressos, excursions, coffee and snacks during the breaks and a light lunch (sandwich), welcome/farewell dinner, course folder/backpack and certificate of attendance).
