MEDIA AND RELIGION EVENT - 15th April - University of East Anglia

On Monday 15th April, we will hold an all-day, cross-faculty, Media and Religion Event with two guest speakers Professor Kim Knott* and Professor Jolyon Mitchell*

In the morning (11-1) University of East Anglia will hold an interactive workshop with  two guests with the support of Dr. Eylem Atakav (School of Film, Television and Media Studies), Dr. Lee Marsden (Politics, Social and International Relations), Dr. Martin Scott (Development Studies) and Dr. Colette Harris (Development Studies). The workshop will focus on issues around media and religion. An output of the session will be questions for the afternoon's public event.

The afternoon session (2-4) will be open to everyone and will take the format of BBC Television's Question Time. The questions will be asked by students from the morning's session and the panel will consist of the guests, the above UEA lecturers and 1-2 students. This session will be followed by a Radio Phone in session on Future Radio, at a time to be announced, but that will take the format of BBC Radio 4's Any Answers session.

------*Professor Knott teaches in religious studies at the University of Lancaster. She is currently a Global Uncertainties Leadership Fellow researching the role of ideologies, beliefs and commitments in people's motivations and justifications for violent and non-violent action at times of risk and uncertainty. She has studied the representation of religion in the British print media in the 1980s and today. Her research interests include the theorization of space and place; the interrogation of religious and political spaces; spatial metaphors in religious and political discourse; the relationship between religion and non-religion; the 'secular sacred'; media representations of religion; and religion and its intersections with migration, diasporas, diversity and ethnicity.*Professor Mitchell's research and teaching focuses on: Peacebuilding, Violence & Communications; Film, Religion & Ethics; Media, Religion & Culture; Theology, History & the Arts; and Media Ethics. Educated at Cambridge, Durham, and Edinburgh Universities, Jolyon Mitchell worked as a producer and journalist for BBC World Service and BBC Radio 4 before he was appointed to the University of Edinburgh. As Director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues he directs a number of research projects and helps to host a wide range of public lectures and events.

MeCCSA is the subject association for the field of media, communication and cultural studies in UK Higher Education. Membership is open to all who teach and research these subjects in HE institutions, via either institutional or individual membership. The field includes film and TV production, journalism, radio, photography, creative writing, publishing, interactive media and the web; and it includes higher education for media practice as well as for media studies.
