Lecturer in Musical Theatre (Ref: 10007512)

Salary: £32,267-£35,244

Closing date: 22 March 2013

Interview dates: 1 and 2 May 2013

The School of Creative Arts, Film and Media of the University of Portsmouth invites applications for the post of Lecturer in Musical Theatre. This post contributes to the delivery of the BA in Drama and Performance.

The BA in Drama and Performance offers students the opportunity to specialise in the study of musical theatre, guided by expert academics that have developed an international reputation for leading research in this fascinating interdisciplinary area. The Song, Stage and Screen conference and the journal, Studies in Musical Theatre (Intellect), were founded at Portsmouth and an innovative curriculum, balancing interdisciplinary critical theory and practice, has grown up around such activity.

This is a particularly exciting time to join the team because new purpose-built facilities for Drama and Performance are being developed on a site adjacent to Portsmouth’s New Theatre Royal. This builds on our on-going working relationship with this beautiful Victorian theatre and marks the beginning of a new chapter for our work in the heart of the city.

We seek an outstanding individual with excellent subject knowledge capable of guiding students in critical, analytical and practical approaches to the study of musical theatre. They will deliver, coordinate and review a range of teaching units within the Drama and Performance subject area and especially in the musical theatre pathway of units. They will undertake marking and verification of assessments and also contribute to the general delivery and development of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. They will engage with the research culture of the school to ensure teaching is kept current through active scholarship and via links with the theatre industry.

Applicants must have previous experience of performing arts provision in higher education, a higher degree in a related discipline, be able to motivate students in musical theatre work and to work as part of a dynamic academic team. A track record in academic research and experience of Practice-as-Research methodologies, vocal coaching and the musical theatre industry are highly desirable.
