Dear colleagues,
The Goldschmidt meeting 2013 (http://goldschmidt.info/2013/)
will be held in Florence, Italy this summer and we would like to
draw your attention to the session 22i:
"Decoding Mechanisms, Rates
and Timescales of Transport Processes in the Earth by Mineralogy
and Geochemistry"
The
spatial variations of minerals along with the mobility of elements
and isotopes in Earth systems are fundamental factors in
understanding geochemical cycles at all scales. Today, the rates and
contributions of atmospheric, sedimentary and volcanic processes can
be accurately measured, but knowledge of rates and timescales of
mid-crustal to mantle processes, where transport of matter is mainly
coupled to fluid flow, diffusion and mineral reactions are still
elusive. The general focus is on efforts to quantitatively describe
and interpret all aspects of rock alteration on various scales based
on mineral occurrences and/or on the chemical and isotopic
compositions of solids. This session aims to shed light on
diffusional and advective transport-controlled processes of texture
formation and metasomatism/rock alteration to understand the
underlying mechanisms and to deduce rates and timescales of
geological phenomena and events. Contributions from the field,
experiments, as well as theoretical and modeling studies, are
welcome.
Keynote speaker: Oliver Pluemper (Univ Utrecht, NL)
