Mark,

Don’t they have to be done against a white background?

Thanks

We have taken the view that the effort to get the understanding with the student on whether they will use it or want to in the future, along with working out who has and hasn’t had it done would be difficult to manage. Therefore everyone will have a picture taken before the test, when they will be given their answer sheet. It takes a matter of seconds with the Upper Main Suite and we have enough to do with SFL with pairings issues and sorting ‘dummies’ etc to worry about who has or has not had a photo taken!

Hi everyone

Will you be introducing the photo taking for all students in the summer series doing SFL? We don’t think many of ours will use their ESOL for border control so were hoping to not have to go down this route. Our numbers are so large that it will make it a logistically challenging task…

Thanks

Lorna

I agree in principle with your concerns, but the going rate for sitting tests (based on a recent court case) is around £500 a series.

This sort of problem is why I refuse to accept external candidates and hence require the candidate to be an enrolled candidate. All of our enrolled learners are already (supposed to be) photographed at enrolment so are used to the process. Like Mark we take the first photo at the speaking session for CAE but are fortunate to have avoided ESOL Skills for Life and IELTS so do not have the numbers to do yet.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far.

I'm also concerned about increasing numbers for the summer exams.  I understand the need to establish a candidate's identity but don't think we should effectively be doing the job of the border agency!

Think it's more to do with the border agency allowing the qualification to be used for immigration purposes but agree logistics of these things are not understood when these wonderful ideas are conceived by those who have never worked or been into a centre! Just glad we aren't the IELTS centre for the area, as that's taking finger prints too!

Mark,

I know we will have the same problem. We have over 200 entries for ESOL Skills For Life in Summer this year.  In the past we have only 30/40 in each session taking Cambridge CAE which we took the photos on the Speaking Test day.

Cambridge either don't realise or don't care about the logistical problems this creates for Exams staff.

I'm preparing myself for the summer when they will be taken for the Skills for Life ESOL qualification, where I have around 300 entries!

We do the same here - to date, on fairly small numbers thank goodness, though it was still hard work!

We do ours before they do their Speaking tests, in the preparation room where they get into their pairs, leave their belongings etc. before going to their test room. This is easier to manage as they arrive throughout the day for their allocated time, rather than on a day when they do their written papers and arrive on mass!

Hi All

We only have small numbers of candidates that require test day photos at the moment but are finding it quite a challenge to ensure that students arrive for the photo session.

How are you all managing the requirement to take test day photos?

Thanks
