Call for papers

12th Conference 'European Culture', 24-26 October 2013, Barcelona, Spain

Encounters with difference in European borderlands

Session convenors: Bas Spierings (Utrecht University) and Martin van der Velde (Radboud University Nijmegen)

The European Union aims to promote cross-border mobility and community building through the removal of physical borders between member states. Despite such endeavors, mental interpretations of international differences still have important implications for daily life and especially for people living close to borders or in 'borderlands'. Borderlands provide many opportunities for encountering differences, including social, cultural, political, economic and physical ones. Whereas their interpretations seem rather dynamic they can be quite stable at the same time, as they may have strong historical roots. Via everyday encounters, differences with 'the other' and 'the other side' of the border are being (re)negotiated in a relational manner.

We invite papers that explore, from a variety of angles - both theoretical and empirical -, how differences are being (re)negotiated in cross-border contexts, including coping strategies used to deal with difference in a variety of settings - e.g. during journeys to 'the other side' of the border as well as when recreating, working and living there.

Please submit abstracts (of no more than 250 words and by using the conference abstract form: http://www.uic.es/en/european-culture-papers) to both Bas Spierings ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and Martin van der Velde ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by Wednesday 20 March 2013.

See http://www.uic.es/en/european-culture?set=S for more information about the conference.

Many thanks and kind regards,
Bas Spierings
Martin van der Velde
