Medical Statisticians

Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit, London

Salary in range £28,000-£36,000 (approximately) p.a. inclusive of London weighting

The MRC Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is a centre of excellence for clinical trials, meta-analyses and epidemiological studies. Work within the Unit falls into one of three main themes: Infectious Disease, Cancer and other Non-Infectious Diseases, and Methodology. The Unit currently employs around 200 multidisciplinary staff, including 40 statisticians.

We wish to appoint two or more statisticians to assist in the design and analysis of a number of new and ongoing research studies. One post will work primarily on studies in infectious diseases and the other on studies in cancer. Applied methodological research is also encouraged. All candidates should have, or expect to obtain, an MSc or PhD in Medical Statistics (or closely related subject).

Those with little or no previous work experience would be appointed to MRC Band 5. While gaining experience in all stages of clinical trial development they would be responsible for interim and final analyses of ongoing clinical trials, under the direction of a senior statistician. Candidates with substantial, relevant experience would be considered for appointment to MRC Band 4. They would take a key role in several trial teams, taking primary responsibility for trial analysis plans, interim and final trial analyses and would develop their expertise in trial design and grant application writing.

Candidates should have close familiarity with one or more statistical packages (e.g. STATA, SAS, SPLUS), have good communication skills, possess initiative, and be able to work effectively in a team.

Salary includes London Weighting and Central London Supplement, and depends on qualifications and previous experience. Benefits include 30 days annual leave days per year, a contributory pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan.

Address informal enquiries to Sally Stenning (cancer post) ([log in to unmask]) or Angela Crook ([log in to unmask]) or David Dunn ([log in to unmask]) for infectious disease posts.
