Subject: Re: SYNTHESYS Advanced Training in Collections Management: Curation of ethnobiology collections

Applications are invited to attend this course, aimed at curators of ethnobiological collections in Europe, particularly those contained within natural history museums and botanic gardens. Such collections of useful plant and animal products were a major feature of 19th century botanic gardens and museums, but are now often neglected. Renewed interest in natural products and indigenous cultures is leading both to the establishment of new collections, and the rediscovery of old. The course covers collection care, development, databases, user communities and funding – detailed programme on web site.

Subject: SYNTHESYS Advanced Training in Collections Management: Curation of ethnobiology collections

Dear all,

In the frame of SYNTHESYS Advanced Training in Collections Management the last course opens the call for participants.
The course “Curation of ethnobiology collections” will take place on June 24-25, 2013. See also: http://synthesys.cybertaxonomy.africamuseum.be/page/module_5_curation_ethnobiology_collections

Short description:

"Many natural history museums contain artefacts and raw materials demonstrating use of natural materials by humans. These present special challenges to curators in storage, cataloguing, ethics and law, funding, and  deterioration and conservation. This short course tackles these questions through modern museum methods, and the experience of the Economic Botany Collection at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew (UK). The course is relevant to both plant and animal collections.”

Location: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK.

To register, please fill in the application form: http://synthesys.cybertaxonomy.africamuseum.be/webform/application_form. A limited number of places will be available. There is no registration fee required. Lunch will be provided for all participants on the day of arrival and the day of departure. Transport and accommodation costs must be covered by the participants themselves. Preference will be given to applicants who are actively involved in collection management/care at their institute. Extended motivation letter is required and will play a crucial role in the selection procedure. The course will be given in English.

Registration deadline: 28/02/2013.
