New Guidance on pregnant women exposed to certain occupational patterns, such as prolonged working hours, shift work, lifting, standing or heavy physical workload, may have concerns about associations with adverse outcomes such as miscarriage, preterm delivery, small for gestational age, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia and gestational hypertension, and seek advice from their doctor. In general the additional risk is very low there are small but significant associations between some working patterns and certain adverse outcomes.
This concise guidance draws on systematic review of the literature to provide doctors caring for healthy women with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies with risk estimates and advice on counselling.
