Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] testing and hygiene

I had a similar experience as a result of teaching on a first aid at work
course. The trainer (a very experienced OHN but not me) was teaching a bout
bleeding direct pressure, elevation etc. She also mentioned there is major
trauma and the above techniques do not stop the bleeding then the next thing
is pressure to a pressure point. Candidate on the course was a member of the
Red Cross or St Johns. She ran to HR saying that the trainer had taught
incorrect and outdated material, she knew she was correct as she was in the
Red Cross, this isn¹t in the First Aid manual etc etc. I was asked to
respond. I stood by the trainer only to be used in the event of serious
bleeding. I had already checked out with a medical adviser at HSE
application of indirect pressure could be taught in the case of major
trauma. He agreed that was acceptable. The FA course happened to occur on
the day of the Madrid rail bombing. I advised the HR professional of this
and also reminded them that anyone who had had a limb been blown off would
most likely have bled to death had in-direct pressure not been applied. End
of complaint. First aid delegate got their ³comeuppance² as they were the
one who showed their lack of knowledge.
