I had a similar "telltale" experience
in the mid-nineties when working in a manufacturing setting. We still offered
a treatment service at the time (and had separate male and female waiting
rooms). I came in and did away with a whole raft of potions, pills and
lotions. You should have heard the uproar when I started to wash their
lacerations under running water instead of using cotton wool balls, Savlon
and some yellow cream whose name escapes me!! I was called up in front
of a senior management team meeting (the Union's Chief Steward was also
present). Soon shut them up by presenting all the professional evidence
supporting my actions and showing how much money I was saving them per
annum.

Andy

Thank you for all your comments and documentation.
I think my failing was that although I knew I was not harming the emploee
they did not know this. My role is to reassure them and make them comfortable
therefore in future I will make a point of using the gel infront of them
and have a box of gloves visible to use if they start to heamorhage profusely
from the lancet! Hate it when people teltale to HR - would much prefer
them to discuss ther concerns directly with me!

?Some useful info from GOSH
I would get alcohol gel - alcohol foam if you can as it appears to be less
irritating.
These would be the same people who would say why didn't you clean the skin
with
an alcohol wipe when then has been discarded as a practice for anyone except
the
visibly dirty skin since 2007.
My nurses wash before a clinic, use alcohol gel before any injection or
phlebotomy in front of the client and wash hands before/after glove wearing
or
at least every 3 or so uses of alcohol gel.

Sue

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] testing and hygiene
Good afternoon. I am currently doing cholesterol and diabetes testing in
the
work environment.
Someone has complained as I dont wear gloves and was not seen to wash
my hands!
I do not get the blood on my hands and if I do of course they would be
washed.I
have bacterial wipes. If you offer these tests please can you advise what
you do
regarding hygiene - would you wear gloves and wash between each person?.
Thanks
Tracy
