medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Thanks, Stan. Your explanation makes perfect sense of what I saw in my browse through the AAS, especially for 20th-C documents. It would be interesting to know how far back the chancery started using modern dating for routine documents. If it were more important and I had the time, I would dig more deeply than the Vatican’s on-line acta, which start in 1865. But this search is in aid of a toss-away footnote and doesn’t need to be more accurate than “19th century.”

Best,
John

Not surprising that it is retaine d in the can onization act a because we still cha nt the date in the Roman system e ach day at the start of the Martyrology.

Browsing through the Acta Apostolicae Sedis, it appears that the Vatican used the Roman system of dating with some frequency in very formal or ceremonial documents even late into the nineteenth century (1880s). It still occasionally appears today, usually in acta dealing with the canonization of saints.

IUN" but the 20th-century encyclicals, etc.that I've browsed all use modern dating.
