Not in the Cheddar Valley,
Dave: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ‘double door’
sluice, and I’ve lived in wetlands all my life. They are all unlock and
lift (sometimes with windlass apparatus, sometimes just lifted by brute force
and locked in place). My dad used to look after one on the end of the Cheddar
main drain in the Upper
Axe Valley
until they installed diesal pumps in 1964.

I am
currently enhancing our records on flood defences and have come across the term
‘soss’. I had thought it may refer to a sluice; however an old book
