Seems possible that a soss is a navigible sluice, like a staunch (or stanch) though that term also appears in the book referenced by Sarah, and I don't recognise soss from the Suffolk navigations.

Not in the Cheddar Valley, Dave: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ‘double door’ sluice, and I’ve lived in wetlands all my life. They are all unlock and lift (sometimes with windlass apparatus, sometimes just lifted by brute force and locked in place). My dad used to look after one on the end of the Cheddar main drain in the Upper Axe Valley until they installed diesal pumps in 1964.

A soss is an up and down gate while a sluice operates like double doors.

Hello All

I am currently enhancing our records on flood defences and have come across the term ‘soss’. I had thought it may refer to a sluice; however an old book I have found of the internet records a soss and sluice being installed. http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=apIJAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA428&lpg=PA428&dq=stanground+drainage+of+the+fens&source=bl&ots=RDGrvosZEb&sig=pqD8IPkWCBmpkgsUQ8fr3tfjaWI&hl=en&sa=X&ei=rZkbUe-fIvOW0QXXyICoDg&ved=0CCcQ6AEwAw#v=snippet&q=stanground%20&f=false

Any ideas would be gratefully received ☺

Best wishes
