Dear team, Please circulate the following amongst the readership: Talk: Prof Hal Klepak: 'The First Signs of the Man He Was to Be: Churchill in Cuba, 1895' Mar 6, 2013 5:30 - 7:00 PM Location: UCL-Institute of the Americas<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/americas/>, 51 Gordon Square, London, WC1H 0PQ<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/americas/find-us> UCL - Institute of the Americas (UCL-IA) cordially invites you to join Prof Hal Klepak<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/americas/documents/cv-klepak> (Royal Military College of Canada) for this talk. While Sir Winston Churchill's right to the title of "Man of the Century" is rarely doubted, it is much less known that many of the attributes that gained him his reknown were already visible before his 21st birthday and were shown in the almost unresearched several weeks that he spent in Cuba in 1895. With recent research in Cuban, Spanish and British archives as well as on the ground where he observed, wrote and served, it has been possible to discover much more about the role he played as war correspondent, military observer for the War Office, writer, artist, and political analyst than had ever been imagined. The initial results of this research reveal much about the man in this, his first adventure, abroad when he got to know the Cuban revolt, the Spanish army on campaign there, the political intricacies of his role, and the advantages and pitfalls of public notoriety. Attendance is free of charge, but registration is required. Many thanks and kind regards, Oscar Martinez Events Coordinator UCL - Institute of the Americas Postal address: Gower St London WC1E 6BT Location: 51 Gordon Sq London WC1H 0PN tel.: 020 31 08 97 21 ext.: 59721 e-mail: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> www.ucl.ac.uk/americas
