This is a terrible attack on an independent bookshop, Freedom Bookshop. A journalist friend tells me the shop was attacked in the 90s by Fascists. Though the English Defence League (EDL) have been largely overwhelmed on the streets today, the splinters are dangerous indeed. It’s a real pity we don’t still have the Federation of Radical Bookshops which survived to around 1990. It collapsed as independent bookshops withered via the scrapping of the Net Book Agreement and the huge rise of Book Chains, then Amazon. In 2013 it seems that such organisations, networks and unions are out dated. However, I would suggest they’re even more important now to give mutual support and help.

Best wishes, Rupert

a few of us are organising a benefit gig to raise much needed funds . . . . anyone who wants to read, or help in putting the thing together (its fairly hard for me cos I'm out of the country, but I'm doing my best), get in touch.
