Colleagues may be interested in progress on the Universal Declaration on Archives, and in the opportunity to sign the register of support (UK signatories currently 0.64% of the world total ...)

Best wishes

Subject: [Ica-l] Universal Declaration on Archives - an update

Dear Colleagues,

The Universal Declaration on Archives was endorsed by UNESCO in November 2011, recognition of the importance of archives and archivists by the world's most recognised guardian of cultural heritage.

A Working Group has been formed in order to continue the work undertaken by members of the ICA in developing the UDA up to that point. The overall aim of the UDAWG is to encourage awareness of the UDA within the profession but more importantly, amongst those who know little of archives and archivists.

Several tools have already been developed in order to facilitate and encourage awareness of the UDA.

A poster of the text is available in a number of languages from the ICA website. We plan to have the finished poster available in all five UNESCO languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Russian). A template of the poster graphic is available to accommodate other languages. Contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

An online Register has been created to accept and log 'signatures' of those who wish to show their support of the UDA. One aim is to reach 1,000,000 signatures by the next ICA Congress in 2016. There are currently 1837 signatures from 42 countries. Have you signed the Register? Visit
http://www.ica.org/13343/universal-declaration-on-archives/universal-declaration-on-archives.html

The UDAWG has representatives from Australia, USA, Canada and France. Do you think you have something to contribute to the work of promoting the UDA, archives? If so, please contact us off line.

Current achievements:

Development of the UDA poster in Hebrew

Development of the UDA poster in Swedish in time for the Annual conference of Swedish Archivists

Articles about the UDA will shortly appear in Archival Outlook (Society of American Archivists), Flash (ICA) and ARC Magazine (Archives and Records Association, UK & Northern Ireland)

Kind regards until next time,
