Putting Archives on the map - using
augmented reality to bring images to life
Out and about in Surrey? It’s worth
checking our new app to see historic images of the county nearest to where
you’re standing.
The Surrey History Centre have geocoded
many of the archive records from the collection of over 2000 items made
by Robert Barclay (1750-1830) of Bury Hill, Dorking.
The collection includes over 500 early
19th century watercolour views by father and son John and Edward Hassell,
and 17th to 19th century prints of people and views
In conjunction with Layar Augmented
Reality, you can for the first time place yourself where John and Edward
sat and painted the beautiful watercolours.
How did the artist interpret the scene?
Find out for yourself by downloading the Layar app for Android or
iPhone and search for Surrey in Geo Layers. [https://www.layar.com/download/]
Find out more about John and Edward
Hassell and see other examples of their work [http://www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/themes/people/artists/john_hassell/].
High quality copies of all of these watercolours and many other items are
available to purchase from the Surrey History Centre [http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/recreation-heritage-and-culture/archives-and-history/surrey-history-centre]
This is a first step in developing the
image content on ESP and more will be uploaded to be viewed on the maps
when the records are geocoded.
