Hi

UK NEQAS position is that:-

Serum Urate  is umol/L

Urine Urate is mmol/L

Also concerned also about Serum Ethanol

The Guidance that it should be mg/L seems to be at odds with what 2/3 of Labs appear to do.

We currently take the view for all our analytes that we have ‘recommended’ units, but also ‘allowable’ units ( historically to allow genuine differences in practice  [for example for Urate allowing either mmol/L or umol/L], but not not allowing any old unit to be accepted [eg in this case ng/dL ], just because one lab uses it).

I would prefer to tighten this up for the UK and to have a single ‘recommended’ unit that was mandatory rather than optional.

Regards

Finlay

Subject: Unit of measurement - serum urate

Dear All,

Could somebody enlighten me please on the long-term plan re reporting UoM for serum urate?

We currently use umol/L, as quoted by Pathology Harmony UK, yet the most recent PBCL Read Code output to include UoM (May 2012) states mmol/L as the desired/optimal unit.

This discrepancy was also highlighted recently by the mistake made when WEQAS asked, ‘in accordance with the Pathology Harmony Guidelines regarding the standardisation of urate units’, for urine urate results to now be submitted in umol/L, instead of, as intended, for serum urate results to now be submitted in umol/L; admittedly a mistake WEQAS quickly rectified.

There is ‘perceived’ pressure to adopt the Read Codes as soon as possible; yet no-one wants to make changes only to have to change back again at a later date. Thanks very much,

Liz
