I always put in my assessment criteria that I have the right to amend marks and that my decision is final. However, this is supported by student generated evidence – I get students to record evidence of their group work (usually via online forums) to help me make any judgements. If I make ‘uniformed’ decisions this is because I have to make them based on the evidence available and again; I make this clear to the students to encourage them to log their group work. In 12 or more years of doing this, I’ve only ever had one (unfounded) complaint.

Regards

Paul

Hi Michele,

You can delete an individual's submission whilst an assessment is running - there is an option on the RHS when you look at 'Open assessments'. After is has closed I guess the only way would be to manually delete/change marks in the generated Excel reports, unless anyone knows of another way?

What happens if you ever have a student who has given marks which clearly are not appropriate? For example, if they give a very low mark for an area which you know is not deserved and seems to be given because they didn't like the student they are marking?

How much scope is there to change marks given by students and how would this be done? (I don't think I will need to do it this time - I'm just asking in case it ever comes up, which given my own experience of group projects may happen very occasionally over a number of years).

Hi Michele,

There a several reports available, some of which may not be of direct interest/use to you. Even so, I get in the habit of downloading the reports so I’ve got a local copy, just in case Murphy’s Law kicks in and they are somehow lost on the WebPA server, not that they ever are of course!

Thanks Shona,

I think I just wasn't seeing the reports because I hadn't said what percentage of the overall mark should be affected by the students marks. I'm seeing lots of lovely reports now and am very happy indeed. :-)

Hi Michele,

You will still have access to the full set of reports with individual breakdown of student's responses, even after entering the group marks. I have done this before without any problems.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply, Paul.

I really just wanted to confirm that I will be able to see the marks that individual students allocated once the project marks have been put in, and that this won't be hidden from me. I tried to have a look to see if there is a handbook, or examples online, but I haven't been able to find any. From what you are saying, it does seem that I will be able to see them?

The projects will finally be marked within the next day or so, but it is really just so that people know what to expect.

Hi Michele,

If I understand your query correctly, you could put in arbitrary marks
for them to start with e.g. 50% for everyone and that will make the
reports available? You can then update the marks once you've done the
full marking for each project.

Subject: Seeing the marks that individual students have assigned

Dear all,

We have run a group project. Students have marked one another, and we
are marking their projects so have not yet put in the project marks. The
assessment is closed at the moment.

I wanted to know if it will be possible to see what marks each students
allocated, once we have put in the project marks. We are running another
group project this semester, which will involve more staff and students
and we wanted to be able to tell them how it will work, but because it
is taking us a while to get all the group projects marked, we haven't
yet completed the whole process for last semesters projects.

In the past, we have used a paper based version of students marking one
another on the group projects, which has meant that we are able to pick
up any potential problems early on, and also that we are able to sort
out any unfair or unreasonable marking that takes place, which has
happened from time to time over the years (although it is quite unusual,
and we are usually able to sort it out to everyone's satisfaction).

Thanks for your help

Michele
