Unesco is run by creationists? I have now heard everything.

Oh my yes, they're under the bed, in the bed, everywhere!

The thing about UNESCO and similar agencies is that they work according to the lowest common denominator, and that denominator is pretty damn low.

As for Jha's article in the Groan, it's all very well for the likes of slebs such as Harry Kroto to go on about the Ri and 21 Albemarle Street. They are welcome to dip into their own pockets and raise public subscriptions, but if they go for a taxpayer bailout of then there could be trouble, with m'learned friends involved. If, on the other hand, their primary purpose is to overhaul the Ri's management regime and develop a proper business model for the organisation,…

Emotion lite? It's all emotion and sacredness. They are talking of the salvation of the Ri, and it's largely about the building.

Someone else asked about examples of industrial sites granted world heritage status. One example that comes to mind are the 17-18th century Engelsberg ironworks in Västmanland, Sweden. Very interesting, as it goes, but so too is the Crossness sewage sludge incinerator and pumping house on the River Thames in Belvedere.

As for Swindon, John Betjeman's bombing aim was a little far to the east.
