In a previous life (??!!) I worked as a midwife and I recall a particularly painful condition of pregnancy called Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD). This is caused by the hormones over-softening the ligaments, in particular those at the front of the pubic bone, resulting in the symphysis pubis “shifting” and causing quite severe pain. The sufferers often also cited sciatica-like pain so it may be worth considering this as a possible cause of her pain? The use of a specific “maternity belt” was used back in the ‘80s but my understanding is that these are no longer recommended.

As already mentioned, physiotherapy is helpful, as is using a good, supportive office chair with adjustable seat pan and tilt mechanism.

Hope this helps.

Hi all,

and thank you for your responses - she is currently 29 weeks. Very mild pains at present that seem to be worse after a day of sitting. I have advised management of the adjustments i advised in my original post. Just wondered if there was anything else that the collective may have utilized in the past.

Thanks for the advice on the maternity physio - I will advise to discuss this with midwife at her next visit.

Kind regards

This is an excellent site http://www.pelvicinstability.org.uk/faq.asp for pregnancy related back pain.

this can be very difficult to manage and often worsens as the pregnancy progresses making sustaining work very difficult. She needs to see a specialist maternity physio for advice and these are usually accessed via the ante natal clinic.

The most you can do is advise on the adjustments that may help manage discomfort in work but make it clear that the prognosis for sustained work attendance is often poor in such cases.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Sciatic pain during pregnancy

Good morning all -

I wonder if any of you have any additional advice you would give an office worker (90% desk based role) who is suffering from Sciatic Pain in her pregnancy?

Advice so far -

  • Regular breaks from sitting.
  • Foam support (alternating sides)
  • Warm compress
  • Refered to Midwife for possibility of a maternity belt

thanks in advance!
