Seems to reiterate Andrew Gilligan's grossly oversimplified dichotomy here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/9745573/Immigration-If-someone-asks-Im-British-end-of-story.html - blatantly disregarding the principles & reasons behind positive action for equality of opportunity, nasty!

Best wishes for 2013

While there is a case for reviewing the amount printed translated materially routinely held by councils, its a bit more complex than simply saying only have material printed in English. But Tip 34 is a really a bit more sinister than that.

'Translation undermines community cohesion by encourage segregation. Similarly, do not give community grants to organisations which promote segregation or division in society'.

Happy New Year.

Don't know if members of the group have seen this- might be of interest.

Also noteworthy is number 34 - stop translating documents.

Dear All

Just for a general interest, the Dept for Communities and Local Government has produced a 50 top tips for councils on saving money; if you take the time to read them I am sure you would come to the conclusion that I did that they have some good ideas, but would actually require staff, money and resources to implement them and hence back into a vicious circle of cuts begetting cuts! Anyway I digress, the point I wanted to draw your attention to was the following top tip: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/39264/50_ways_2.pdf

End lifestyle and equality questionnaires: Some councils spend time and money on asking suppliers and residents to fill out intrusive questionnaires about their sexuality, religion and other personal details - be it to take out a library book or make a planning application. Statutory guidance from DCLG has stated that this is simply not necessary.73 Similarly, councils do not need to routinely spend time and money on Equality Impact Assessments on everything they do.

I know we are not councils but I thought it interesting that once again the government is highlighting equality as a expensive burden and something that can be trimmed and cut. I also found the language interesting to highlight SO and R&B and intrusive monitoring, the week after the census showed that the country is more diverse than ever, and I would assume these types of monitoring and analysis are ever more important to help councils meets the needs of their communities!

Anyway that was just a food for thought moment

Regards

Darren
