Race Equality Foundation and Mental Health Providers Forum launch briefing paper about

the importance of language support in health and social care

Race Equality Foundation and Mental Health Providers Forum are hosting a joint event to launch a new briefing paper written by Dr Beverley Costa, CEO of Mothertongue, entitled ‘Language Support: Challenges and benefits for users and providers of health and social care services’

Evidence concerning the significance of communication in relation to effective health care provision suggests that language can be an important barrier to accessing health and social care services. Whilst recent changes in health and social care legislation in the UK have emphasised a commitment to choice, effective information and patients at the heart of the NHS, the multilingual landscape creates challenges for both user and provider in making this a reality.

This briefing paper discusses different approaches to language support in health and social care, by comparing the use of professional and volunteer interpreters.  The author identifies key implications for policy and practice from both a patient and a provider perspective, and offers an understanding of how interpreting can reduce health inequalities.

This is the latest briefing paper in our Better Health series.  As with the other briefing papers it explores the evidence as well as identifying practice and policy implications.  The briefing papers and other resources can be found on www.better-health.org.uk.

Dr Beverley Costa, has published a number of papers and chapters about language, culture and therapy. In 2000 Beverley set up Motherongue, a culturally and linguistically sensitive therapeutic support service for people from black and minority ethnic communities. In 2008 Mothertongue has won the Award for Excellence in the Practice of Counselling and Psychotherapy from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and in 2009 The Queen’s Award for Volunteering.

The paper will be launched at a roundtable event on Thursday, 14th of February between 3 and 5 pm at the Race Equality Foundation offices, Unit 17 Deane House Studios, 27 Greenwood Place, London, NW5 1LB.

Light refreshments will be provided and all participants will receive a copy of the briefing.
