Subject: Reviews in History email alert - 24 January 2013

Welcome back to Reviews in History, your weekly digest of reviews of books and digital resources from across the subject.

The biannual Reviews in History Advisory Board meeting was yesterday – always a nerve-wracking experience, as the dark corners of one’s working life are exposed to the merciless bright searchlights of this panel of the great and the good of the UK history world…

…actually they’re all very nice and it was fine…

Ok, reviews. Our featured piece this week is on Sacral Geographies: Saints, Shrines, and Territory in Medieval Ireland by Karen Overbey. Sarah Erskine believes (no. 1371, with response here) scholars will find this book entertaining in some parts, highly satisfying in most, and provocative enough to encourage future responses and development.

Then Christine Winter suggests (no. 1370) that the reader ignore the hype around Sönke Neitzel and Harald Welzer’s Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing and Dying. The Secret World War II Transcripts of German POWs, and read it carefully, thoughtfully and critically.

Next up is Science in the Twentieth Century and Beyond by Jon Agar. Graeme Gooday enjoys (no. 1369) an ambitious and often fascinating book.

Finally we turn to Afterimage of Empire: Photography in Nineteenth-Century India by Zahid Chaudhary, with Carla Manfredi and the author discussing (no. 1368, with response here) a new place of departure for studies of colonialism, photography and visuality.

You can also search and browse all 1371 reviews here – do please let me know if you have any problem navigating the site or finding what you’re interested in.

Remember as well to check us out on Twitter - https://twitter.com/ReviewsHistory, and as ever, do please make sure to send all comments or suggestions to [log in to unmask], and, if you no longer wish to receive emails from Reviews in History, let me know and I will unsubscribe you immediately.

Best wishes
