Chris,
We find it useful (in the city) to record
instances of peat deposits etc so we can map extents. Similarly the depth of
deposits (both superficial and solid) is very useful in the city for DC
purposes etc. I suppose these reasons would be less valid for non-urban
locations, however it may still be useful record geology in rural areas that
may not be recorded in detail by the BGS, eg clay outcrops, which may help in
predicting archaeological potential.

I'd mostly agree with Nick (and we no
longer record geology) but I can see why city centres are different.
The
basic question though, is why? I suspect people started to record geology in
'new archaeology' days when we thought that if only we could collect all the
data we could get a computer to give us the answer (to paraphrase it slightly).
There may be good reasons for recording the underlying geology (and Ingrid
gives one: no one else is - or are they, what about geotechnical examinations)
but it might just be 'because we can'. It's often worth considering if
you've every needed the information for a query ...

We record geology data
(bedrock and superficial deposits) from archaeological reports not BGS
mapping. The BGS data is inaccurate for much of central Southampton
and it seems worthwhile to record the new information obtained from
archaeological investigations. We do this fairly consistently.

Hi Paul,
We record geology pretty
consistently, but mainly from reports rather then the BGS maps etc (mainly as
they are fairly inaccurate for the city / floodplain area, plus we don’t
have access to them anyway). We record superficial as well as solid deposits.

Recording of Geology in HERs
Hi all,
Hopefully this will be
fairly straightforward. I wanted to canvass you on whether:
you record geology in
records on a consistent basis;
whether the details of
the geology come from the results of specific work (e.g. a DBA or a excavation
report with actual descriptions, which may of course differ from the BGS) or
whether you take if directly from BGS maps etc; and
Whether you record
superficial deposits and bedrock or just one type
Thanks
