Dear all,

In February 2010 English Heritage launched the HER21 programme. The programme was designed to assist local authorities to develop HERs that make readily available useful, appropriate and accurate information to those making planning decisions about the future of our historic environment. In addition to four strategic research projects, English Heritage invited HERs and relevant heritage bodies to submit proposals for projects that met this aim. 12 successful projects were chosen covering issues such as data content, interoperability and access.

The methodologies developed as part of these projects have been very informative. They have been used by several HERs and have informed many other subsequent initiatives. When these projects were completed it was, of course, not immediately clear what their long term benefit might be so 18 months on, we asked project managers to provide an update on the sustainability of the work and the impact the projects have had on their current working practice. These updates, in conjunction with the original reports, provide a useful tool for everyone working in the historic environment sector.

The 18 months summaries are available alongside the original project reports on the HELM website at www.helm.org.uk/HER21<http://www.helm.org.uk/HER21> . You will also find the reports for the four strategic research projects and an interim report on the HER21 programme indicating some preliminary areas of potential further work.
