Session 23 – In the wake of colonialism: violence, immigration and neoliberalism in Europe

Throughout Europe (including the Nordic countries), racist and culturalist repertoires have become prominent across the entire spectrum of politics. Generally, this racist turn is understood as reaction to September 11th, to the Madrid and London bombings, and to the increased influx of (“legal” or “illegal”) non-Western immigrants. While the mobilization properties of these phenomena must be recognized, the crux of the matter is something different and more fundamental. Amongst the roots might be the construction of a ‘colonial present’ based in the double process of colonial amnesia and colonial nostalgia (Gregory 2004), a complex interaction of different modes of socially constituted violence, and complex relationships between the development of neoliberalism and European politics towards ‘others’. The session invites papers that address such issues in different scales and from different perspectives.
