There are a couple of databases of film online:

 

Look Back Labor: http://lookbacklabor.blogspot.com This site links to a wide range of online films/clips mostly dealing with US labour. It has especially good coverage of strikes.

 

The Labor Film Database: http://laborfilms.com This site lists feature films/documentaries about work/labour in various sub-categories. It does not provide direct access to the films listed but some will be available online others are only on DVD.

 

A personal favourite film of mine to show students is 'Clockwatchers' - the first ten minutes or so are great for giving a sense of the alienation of temping (as well as of being new).

 

I also like the 'flair' scene in 'Office Space' for emotional/aesthetic labour and the 'memo' scene (same film) for bureaucracy. These are sometimes available as youtube clips but also regularly get taken down.

 

A good one for discussing call centres is this scene from 'Big Nothing': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAjzvy94JsM - which captures many of the issues discussed in readings and is quite funny.

 

There are lots of great Taylorism clips on youtube. I quite like Brendan Cooney's summary in two parts, politely titled: 'Frederick Taylor - the biggest bastard ever' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa4_ihxT9rI

Hi Abigail

Thank-you for sending this request round. I'd be really interested to hear suggestions from WEEL members to help me with my teaching too. I teach a year 3 UG module on work that covers lots of stuff; and I do a couple of taster sessions on work to year 1 students (e.g. on emotional labour; aesthetic labour).

 

I need help here. As evidence, I persist in using excerpts from the old film (wow 1988, I just looked it up) 'Working girl' where the main character has to learn to talk and look 'proper' in order to pass as a senior business woman.The mature students love this. The other 200 students stare blankly at me. I am really useless at telly and all. I am so out of touch that my 5 year old kid explained gangam style to me.

 

I am not sure if these help Abigail with her "skill, deskilling, upskilling, polarisation and/or around non-standard employment" interests, but here are some things I have used...

 

First, of course!, WEEL members Dawn Lyon and Lynnes Pettingers' http://www.nowaytomakealiving.net The students in my module were taken with the 'Dancing' post, when we were discussing fun at work.

Tim Strangleman (thanks tim) pointed out how useful the Clooney film 'Up in the Air' is for teaching on unemployment; and emotional labour. Its also good for technology in the workplace. In the film, the Clooney character works for a firm that sacks people for you.

 

Tyra Banks and 'Americas next top model': 'smising' is great for emotional labour.

 

I've used david Sedaris' 'Santaland Diaries' (as recommended by Julia o'connell davidson) for a festive session: his reflections on working as an elf in Macy's Santaland, including how you recruit and train people for this job.

I am picking up some first year teaching on social divisions this year and wondered whether anyone had found any tv/radio/exciting material around skill, deskilling, upskilling, polarisation and/or around non-standard employment?

 

I am looking for clips for incorporating into lectures or supplementary material for watching/listening to, which might suit a first year undergraduate sociology audience.  Anything that would constitute exciting material for seminars would also be of interest.
