Hi Abigail
Thank-you for sending this request round. I'd be really interested to hear suggestions from WEEL members to help me with my teaching too. I teach a year 3 UG module on work that covers lots of stuff; and I do a couple of taster sessions on work to year 1 students (e.g. on emotional labour; aesthetic labour). 

I need help here. As evidence, I persist in using excerpts from the old film (wow 1988, I just looked it up) 'Working girl' where the main character has to learn to talk and look 'proper' in order to pass as a senior business woman.The mature students love this. The other 200 students stare blankly at me. I am really useless at telly and all. I am so out of touch that my 5 year old kid explained gangam style to me. 

I am not sure if these help Abigail with her "skill, deskilling, upskilling, polarisation and/or around non-standard employment" interests, but here are some things I have used...

Tim Strangleman (thanks tim) pointed out how useful the Clooney film 'Up in the Air' is for teaching on unemployment; and emotional labour. Its also good for technology in the workplace. In the film, the Clooney character works for a firm that sacks people for you.

Tyra Banks and 'Americas next top model': 'smising' is great for emotional labour. 

I've used david Sedaris' 'Santaland Diaries' (as recommended by Julia o'connell davidson) for a festive session: his reflections on working as an elf in Macy's Santaland, including how you recruit and train people for this job.

erm...

Anyone got any better ideas?

Happy New Year!

I am picking up some first year teaching on social divisions this year and wondered whether anyone had found any tv/radio/exciting material around skill, deskilling, upskilling, polarisation and/or around non-standard employment?

I am looking for clips for incorporating into lectures or supplementary material for
watching/listening to, which might suit a first year undergraduate sociology audience.  Anything that would constitute exciting material for seminars would also be of interest.
