Statistician post working on influenza at Health Protection Agency, Colindale, NW London; collaborating with Imperial College London

Salary £34,811-£44,508

Duration initially 1 year with the possibility of extension

Closing date for applications: 20 January 2013

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a statistician to join the Modelling and Economics Unit and collaborate with MRC Centre for Outbreak Analysis & Modelling at Imperial College London to increase our understanding of the 2009-10 influenza pandemic. This project will analyse data from the unique National Pandemic Flu Service (NPFS) that operated in England during the pandemic to provide rapid mass treatment and which also provided uniquely-detailed surveillance data. The project will analyse data extracted from the NPFS system's database, in combination with data from a survey of NPFS users (conducted by HPA with Imperial College), and other data, including GP surveillance.

This project will improve our understanding of fundamental epidemiology of influenza and help assess the effectiveness of NPFS, which was an unprecedented approach to mass treatment and may be a model for other healthcare delivery. The post-holder will gain valuable experience working closely with epidemiologists, statisticians, and modellers at the HPA and Imperial College to perform analysis that is closely linked to policy-making. Both institutions provide advice to government on pandemic planning, and perform real-time analysis in the event of a pandemic.

We are seeking an able statistician with proven high-level skills and an interest in epidemiology and public health. The successful applicant will have the ability to work well in a team with colleagues from a range of disciplines.
