Beyond these theoretical and procedural approaches, are there any examples of allocated time to tasks, i.e. an example of a workload?

Subject: Workload allocation

Dear All

We at HEFCE are aware of two approaches here, one is based on Workload Allocation, often abbreviated to WAM. The approach was pioneered by Professor Peter Barrett in a Leadership Foundation fellowship and subsequently developed with HEFCE funding see http://www.hefce.ac.uk/whatwedo/lgm/lgmprojects/humanresourcemanagement/themanagementofacademicworkloadscreatingacommunityofpractice/

There is a second strand to this work which is nearing completion, specifically related to equality issues, see http://www.hefce.ac.uk/whatwedo/lgm/lgmprojects/equalityanddiversity/salfordgenderoutcomes/

We will launch this work around the time of the UCEA conference on workloads http://www.ucea.ac.uk/en/seminars/index.cfm/maw

The second approach relates to the use of TRAC (Transparent Approach to Costing). Work on this is being undertaken at UWE, see http://www.lfhe.ac.uk/en/research-resources/resources/itf-fund-outcomes/#Project_9 . Scroll to the bottom of the page as it's project 9.

Best wishes
Siobhan

Hi Sanchia

Think there is a lot of work in the sector on this generally, with the aim of getting 'equitable' workloads across disciplines (for example).

Not sure that I have seen anything addressing the specific sorts of issues that you've raised here though - would be interested to see what others are doing...

Also, think I saw a call for an event (UCEA??) ref workload modelling, I think some time in Feb/March in London - but again this looked more 'generic'..

Subject: Workload allocation

Brunel University recently achieved an Athena SWAN Bronze award. Part of the process of submitting the application for this award involved the university conducting focus groups and surveys that informed the development of its action plan. Section four of the plan addressing issues of career advice and support and includes an action about providing support for subject leaders when creating workloads. There is a similar action about workload transparency and fairness in the University's Strategic Plan 2012-17 which has been approved by Council.

My understanding is that practice for allocating workloads varies between schools and subject areas. I have been asked by the Athena Swan self assessment team, to collate some information on the various approaches and good practice. To this end I am conducting a round table discussion on this subject.

Have any of you done anything similar?

Kind Regards
