They exchanged high-fives with players and ringed the field during the national anthem. . About 400 residents of Newtown, Conn., attended the New York Giants-Philadelphia Eagles game Sunday. Among them were a few families who lost children in the massacre this month, the Giants said. One was the family of Jack Pinto, the 6-year-old boy buried in a No. 80 jersey of Giants receiver Victor Cruz. . "We certainly wanted to honor and respect them," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "We wanted to try to do our part to help them in the healing process. I hope they left with some inspiration today." . The families arrived in nine chartered buses. There were some 200 students from the school system to which Sandy Hook Elementary School belongs. . NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell greeted the Newtown group in a stadium tunnel. The residents formed a gantlet to welcome players from both teams before the game. Then they held hands during the anthem. . "It was awesome," Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora said after the Giants' 42-7 victory. "Imagine what they went through on that horrific day. For them to come out here and support us as they did, it was an unbelievable feeling. We had a great effort out there for them." . . Victor Cruz honors Sandy Hook victim Jack Pinto during NY Giants game vs. Atlanta Falcons Cruz, the Giants star receiver, will be wearing the name 'Jack Pinto' on his cleats and gloves on Sunday afternoon, in honor of a six-year-old boy killed during the school shooting on Friday. Jack was a big Giants fan, and a fan of Cruz. But for Victor Cruz, his tribute was personal. . The Giants star receiver wore the name Jack Pinto on his cleats and gloves during the Giants tough, 34-0 loss to Atlanta in honor of a six-year-old boy killed during the mass school shooting on Friday morning. Cruz called Jacks family after learning he was a huge fan of Cruz and the Giants. . Jack was such a big fan of Cruz that his family is even considering burying him in Cruzs No. 80 Giants jersey, Cruz said. It was very humbling to hear how big of a fan he was and how they were thinking about putting my jersey on him for the services, Cruz said. It was an emotional time. It really shows you what type of effect that athletes have on kids. Not just seeing you on TV. They want to be you. They idolize you. They wear your jersey everywhere. . snip . The Giants also held a moment of silence for the victims at the team meeting on Saturday night. And there was no doubt the tragedy was on their mind. . We were all saddened by the events that happened in Newton, Conn., Coughlin said. And I felt terrible about it and Im sure everyone in the nation did as well. And for it to happen so close to home, the players were very upset about it.
