I worked with someone whose wife died of mesothelioma 2 years ago from playing with the asbestos in Essex, it was apparently transported in open barges and use to fly off and settle on the sides of the canals…

This has some resonance, Dawn. When I was a student on  the OH course at the RCN the course director for the P/T OH programme was Peter Holgate. In one of his first lectures remember him recounting that one of the reasons he moved into OH was related to asbestos exposure. He was brought up in an industrial area of Essex and somewhere near a factory where asbestos was processed. Asbestos fibres were escaping from the factory and coating the cars parked nearby with a powder which settled like snow.

Everyone on the list will know of someone who has been exposed to or sadly developed an asbestos related condition.  Peter told us that Asbestos looked so much like snow that it was allegedly  used by film makers in the 1940’s as imitation snow in films as a background to the song White Christmas and Wizard of Oz as can be seen in the link below:

Steve McQueen was another victim of asbestos dying of mesothelioma in 1980. Prior to cinema fame he worked in a range of jobs and roles which could have exposed him to asbestos including construction work and stripping asbestos from the pipes of naval ships.

All,

As someone who came into OH due to losing my father of this work related condition at 55 years old I feel sad that although I did not know him that we still have a disease that is affecting lives that could have been avoided. This condition alone shows what an important role we have in education and prevention.

May he RIP.

I found out today that Simon Pickvance has died of mesothelioma. To anyone who did not know him he was the founder of the Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory Service, he was a brilliant activist, researcher and advocate for workers’ rights in occupational health and safety.  As a fledgling OHN 20 years ago he was an inspiration to me. Sad day indeed.
