Our assessment team put on the reports that the student may have 5 or 10 minutes per hour, this has stopped the students from taking unfair advantage, plus it should be their normal way of working??

We had a student similar to Shirley’s who due to her condition made extremely full use of rest breaks ie a full day to take an exam even going into the evening. The exams team, invigilators and Learning Support all came to dread exam times!

Many years ago I rang AQA to ask about supervised rest breaks and was told that it was extra time with jam on it! It does seem strange that there is no upper time limit.

Very few of our students abuse the rest breaks and we have a front sheet for all access arrangement invigilators to complete to show if access arrangements are used. However I did have a student about five years ago that completed her afternoon (1.30pm start) exam at 6.45! We go to know this student really well over the time she was with us and she made full use of rest breaks, bringing in boxes of food to eat while have a rest! This was all connected to the problems she had but we came to dread her exams especially if they were in the afternoon.

Good morning all

Apologies for mentioning our most hated subject, but this it’s in relation to supervised rest breaks.

Our Senco has just discovered this, and we now have a number of students who are entitled to Supervised Rest breaks, I have been looking in the joke book (oops I meant the JCQ regulations) to see is there limit as to either how long a rest break can last or how many breaks a student can take. Whilst I appreciate that it must relate to the severity of the students condition – I feel in one particular instance a one and half hour exam could end up lasting all day!

How do you monitor or regulate this in your Centre, information will be greatly received.
