GAA Biannual Conference 2013 2. - 5. October at Mainz University

Locations: anthropology in the academy, the workplace, and the public sphere

Panel 29. Anthropology of Art and Art History: Locations

Christiane Brosius and Kerstin Pinther in cooperation with Cathrine Bublatzky and Tobias Wendl

Unlike to the situation of cultural anthropology at US-American universities, the arts play(ed) a rather marginal role in the German-speaking anthropology. This is even more surprising if one considers not only the ongoing "creolization of the arts" and the "boom of biennials", but also the new intersections between universities, museums/exhibition spaces and artists' initiatives resulting from this development. It is in this context, that both disciplines -anthropology of art which generally tended to pursue synchronic research as well as art history with a primarily focus on the arts of Europe and the US from a rather diachronic perspective - are confronted with new theoretical and methodological challenges. The workshop intends to survey historically established collaborations and mutual transfers between art, art history and the anthropology of art. Contributions that address research based practices currently prevalent in the arts - thereby frequently including quasi-anthropological methods - are of equal interest to the workshop as those which examine the currently widely discussed role of the curator as anthropologist. Furthermore, we suggest looking at emerging syntheses and reconfigurations of methodological approaches at the interface of the disciplines. Which requirements does a theory of art that integrates both, a transcultural and historical perspective, have to fulfill? Thereby we are interested in current research projects and case studies focusing on translocal linkages in the field of modern and contemporary art, but also in such contributions that critically engage with similarities and differences between artistic, anthropological and art historical research practices. Moreover, we want to ask about new fields of profession that open up for art historians and anthropologists in the intersection of art and science/scholarship; subsequently we intent to discuss the (new) requirements the academic curriculum must fulfill.
Abstracts should be submitted both as a long version (200 words max.) and a short version (30 words max.). These should be e-mailed directly to the workshop conveners:
