As a personal user of Squarespace, I am forever in the debt of Anthony Casalena and his team
But it does go to show as I said last night to my readers …
When faced with disaster of not just their own business, but that of huge corporations and organisations, as well as the small blogs which use the squarespace platform - the people stayed, they created sleeping areas and they lugged fuel
and will continue to do so - so long as they are capable of doing so. The founder is with them, and he will make the decision to do a clean shut down of the data centers if things become untenable (to be fair most would have run for the hills by now)... they
are still going.
As you know I work in the information industry, and we are constantly having discussions about disaster planning and recovery, backups - offsite as well as onsite, and of course cloud storage. But cloud storage providers are reliant on multiple data centers
in numerous locations - our question was a simple one. Given the widespread devastation - how far away from your main seat of operations is far enough if you want to remain online and in business - and of course that of your businesses you are hosting.
with many thanks to Anthony Casalena and the team of squarespace - you are all amazing.
We hope we are never faced with those kinds of decisions, but how would you cope?

Diesel 'Bucket Brigade' Keeps Peer 1 Online at 75 Broad » Data Center Knowledge
A determined team of employees of Peer 1 Hosting, blog host
Squarespace and Fog Creek Software have formed a “bucket brigade” to relay 5-gallon buckets of diesel fuel up 17 flights of stairs at 75 Broad Street to refuel a generator providing emergency power to the Peer 1 data center.
