From http://www.pmdd.factsforhealth.org/treatment/faq.asp Are medications risky during pregnancy or breast-feeding?

This is a complicated question to answer because there are differences among medications. Pregnancy is an effective way of relieving PMDD; therefore, it should not be necessary to take PMDD medication while pregnant. Most medications do appear in breast milk but the amount getting into an infant is very, very low. Nonetheless, it is best to discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of taking medications during pregnancy and while breast-feeding.

All

Saw this lovely young chap whose partner suffers with PMS/PMDD but has not had a definitive diagnosis of this. She apparently started on Yasmin birth control pill which has heightened her PMDD symptoms and so took herself off them.

The chap is no longer able to cope with her (been increasingly worsening for nearly 3 years in terms of her symptoms) and she doesn’t or won’t talk to him about it other than by text.

They recently discussed starting a family and he wondered if there is a link between her PMDD and post natal depression. I imagine there is but this is completely outside my area of expertise.

He has managed to get her to a family planning clinic with limited success but she won’t see her GP and will not countenance any suggestion of antidepressants.

He’s at loss of what to do next and I wondered if you can offer up some pearls of wisdom, I suggested he lay it on the line with her particularly as she is having scary dysfunctional thoughts and suggested that if that doesn’t work he talk to her mother. He can’t force her to see a GP or get a specialist referral but maybe her Mum could encourage her...

Help – have I missed anything and do you know if there is an established link?

Kind Regards

Jo
