We get a lot here as you might imagine from those who may be drawn to children's nursing.

I have attached some advice on interviewing eating disorders which may help. There is loads on the internet. http://www.anorexiabulimiacare.org.uk/

You need a specialist report no question. The specialist must advise you of the state of play for the individual. Factors to consider:

Are they under the care of a specialist Unit
If so when did that happen (Late discovery of anorexia is most difficult to treat as the behaviours are well established and therefore has poorer prognosis and high relapse rate)
What treatment has been recommended
What have they tried in the past
What has worked and why
Why didn’t that last
Were they compliant
Are they self harming in any other way, cutting etc
What has triggered the current level of instability
What is her commitment to getting well
Does she understand the risk to her employment from absence related to the condition (or is just fainting a lot)

Anorexia is often linked to depression as the weight loss produces serotonin in large but lessening quantities so SSRIs do not work with Anorexia. Amitriptyline or other tricyclic's are better if needed. There may be other symptoms of depression that you may need to understand as well

One of the most effective treatments is 3 month inpatient therapy or day release. It all depends on her current weight/BMI.

We have restricted a girl from working if her BMI goes under 15 on the advice of her specialist. She had a leave of absence for 3 months to get the inpatient treatment and is doing ok now. Our OHP has established a relationship with the specialist and they monitor her and let us know if we need to help.

Regards
Sue

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] anorexia

Hi

I have been asked to assess a teacher who has anorexia. Her performance is being affected currently. Have not yet got the details of what they are asking for or specifics aobut her performance, but anorexia is not an area I know much about so am asking for your wisdom. I guess my main question is:

What are the main considerations for assessing a teacher with anorexia? How long is it reasonable to expect an employer to wait for therapy to have an affect and then be able to expect an improvement in levels of performance.

Many thanks

Anna
